Edinburgh's Dean Village is quite unique within the city. It is just a few minutes walk from the city centre yet, as the name suggests, it has all the qualities of a small village. The environment is peaceful and semi-rural, with the Water of Leith forming a major focus. The village has a milling history which dates back to the twelfth century; by the end of the seventeenth century the Baxters' (Bakers') Guild operated eleven mills which provided flour to Edinburgh and the surrounding villages. With its wonderful architecture and stunning situation, the area is now a highly sought after place in which to live. Dean Village is a Conservation Area and forms part of Edinburgh's World Heritage Site.
